Berlins Ghost Airport

Written by Tony Harkén on torsdag, 08 november 2018. Posted in Right left 3, Tyskland, Artiklar om Tyskland, Main 2

Not a single passenger has used this hi-tech European airport yet. Will they ever arrive?

The city, state and federally funded airport was originally expected to cost €2bn. Earlier this year, however, planners said the current estimated costs would reach €7.3bn, a number that could rise further depending on how long it takes to finish.

And every month the airport sits unopened, it racks up millions of euros in maintenance and upkeep costs.

Tough CO2 targets 'could cost 100,000 jobs': VW chief

Written by Tony Harkén on söndag, 21 oktober 2018. Posted in Tyskland, Artiklar om Tyskland, Main 3, Right bottom - 8st

Setting European Union targets for reducing cars' greenhouse gas output that are too ambitious could backfire with the loss of 100,000 jobs, Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess said Thursday.

If ministers aimed to slash carbon dioxide (CO2) output by 40 percent between 2020 and 2030, "around a quarter of the jobs in our factories would have to go in the space of 10 years - a total of 100,000 posts," Diess told daily Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Money laundering in Germany behind high housing prices, terrorism: intelligence unit

Written by Tony Harkén on fredag, 19 oktober 2018. Posted in Tyskland, Artiklar om Tyskland, Main 3, Right bottom - 8st

Of the almost 60,000 reports of money laundering in Germany in 2017 only 474 cases resulted in judgements, sentences and indictments.

How is Germany fighting against the money laundering which is financing terrorists and criminals in Europe and beyond?

The issue has become particularly evident in Germany’s capital of Berlin. Members of an clan of Arab origin were said to have stolen €9 million from a savings bank, as well as a huge gold coin from the Bode Museum.

Although several clan members were receiving unemployment benefits, real estate was still bought on a large scale - was this money laundering?

‘We'll close our airports!’

Salvini resists Germany’s plans to send migrants back to Italy.

Rome has still not reached an agreement with Berlin on the repatriation of asylum seekers who had first registered in Italy, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said, vowing to close airports to German flights transferring refugees.

“If someone in Berlin or Brussels thinks of dumping dozens of migrants in Italy via unauthorized charter flights, they should know that there is not and there will be no airport available,” Salvini said in a statement, adding that Italy will “close the airports” just as it earlier closed its ports to NGO vessels carrying migrants rescued in the Mediterranean.

Rome fears that Germany might eventually attempt to send back to Italy as many as 40,000 people, who arrived there from the southern European country, the Italian media report.

Second wave of refugees will sweep Europe, says UN food chief

Written by Tony Harkén on fredag, 17 november 2017. Posted in Tyskland, Artiklar om Tyskland, Main 1, Right bottom - 8st

Europe may face a second wave of migration as the situation in refugee camps in Africa and the Middle East is only getting worse, the head of the UN World Food Programme said.

He added there is a clear link between hunger and migration.

Living conditions, mostly food distribution, in refugee camps in crisis-affected regions had deteriorated dramatically before the European migrant crisis struck in 2015, David Beasley, the executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP) told German newspaper Die Zeit.

Why switching to fully electric cars will take time

Written by Tony Harkén on måndag, 16 oktober 2017. Posted in Tyskland, Artiklar om Tyskland, Main 2, Right bottom - 8st

Are electric cars really about to take over from the old-fashioned internal combustion engine?

Judging by some of the headlines we've seen recently, you could be forgiven for thinking petrol and diesel engines were about to be consigned to the scrap heap. Yet the reality is rather different.

There is no question that the car industry is undergoing a radical change.

At this year's Frankfurt Motor Show - currently under way in the German city - the buzzword throughout the cavernous exhibition halls has been "electrification".

The day before the show, for example, Volkswagen said it would build electrified versions of every model in its range - including those sold under the Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche brands - by 2030.

The German central bank (Bundesbank) has brought back 674 tons of gold reserves kept in Paris and New York since the Cold War.

Some 53,780 gold bars, each weighing 12.5kg and worth €440,000, have been shipped to Germany over the last four years, said the bank. The last 100 tons were moved from Paris earlier this year, which means the Bundesbank now holds no reserves in France.
